Walking Tracks

There are numerous waling tracks from Glenfern Sanctuary. The walks below are all accessible locally. If you need further information about walks, please ask us. The DOC booklet provides a complete list, of tracks and check DOC info for track conditions.

Karaka Bay – no public access tracks currently link Karaka Bay to Port Fitzroy via Glenfern. Please use the road access only. We are working on it!

 

Longer walks include:  Coopers Castle Track links to the 3 day Aotea Track check here; Haratonga area Tracks, check here; Kaiaraara Track to Mt Hobson (Hirakimata), check here;  Windy Canyon and Palmer's Track to Mt Hobson (Hirakimata)Kaitoke Hot Springs Track to Mt Hobson (Hirakimata), check here;  South Fork Track, Forest Road (Port Fitzroy to Whangaparapara, check here.


The 25km Aotea Track loops the central mountainous area of Great Barrier Island and is a manageable 3 day circuit for reasonably fit beginner or experienced trampers.

We highly recommend a night at Mount Heale Hut,  a serviced 20 bunk accommodation. Bookings are open for stays from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022.

Walking groups 

We can offer an organized shuttle to the start of certain walking tracks, or drop catering to huts.
