Welcome to Glenfern Sanctuary

Nau mai, haere mai!

Glenfern Sanctuary is a 83-hectare Regional Park and gateway to the Kōtuku Peninsula, a 240-hectare pest-managed area on Aotea/Great Barrier Island. The focus of Glenfern is to protect endangered species through pest control and biodiversity monitoring.

Key Features of Kōtuku Peninsula and Glenfern Sanctuary:

• Location
Kōtuku Peninsula is on the west coast of Aotea/Great Barrier Island, extending from Rarohara Bay to Karaka Bay.

• Land Ownership
The peninsula is comprised of five owners, including Auckland Council Regional Park (Glenfern Sanctuary), a Department of Conservation Scenic reserve, and three private land owners.

• Pest Management
The Sanctuary’s pest management programme has been pivotal in its success. With more than 40km of trap lines and more than 800 active traps, Glenfern maintains rodent populations near undetectable levels, safeguarding breeding habits of native species.
Innovative technologies, such as remote monitoring traps sensors, enhance the efficiency of these conservation efforts.

Species benefiting from these initiatives includes Tākoketai Black Petrel which breeds exclusively on Aotea The Barrier, and the Pāteke Brown Teal with their largest population hosted Aotea hosting.

The Sanctuary also provides habitats for the rare Niho Taniwha Chevron Skink, found only on Aotea The Barrier.

• History
The late Tony Bouzaid, a conservationist and yachtsman, established the Sanctuary in 1992. It became a Regional Park in 2016, enabled through funding from the Nature Heritage Foundation (DOC) and Foundation North together with Auckland Council who officially owns the land.

• Management
Charitable organisation Glenfern Trust manages Glenfern Sanctuary.
